The Chihuahua is the smallest dog which belongs to the small breed. In 1950, people discovered this breed in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico, where the name of Chihuahua comes from. This breed is known for its tiny and graceful appearance, alert and swift-moving expressions. People think highly of Chihuahua’s highly intelligent and cuddly size.

The origin of Chihuahua is still a mystery. Some scholars think that the Chihuahua is the descendent of Chinese hairless dogs. They insist this opinion because they believe the Chinese hairless dogs are the ancient Techichi dog, which have crossed over from Asia to Alaska before continental separation and created modern Chihuahua. But there is no proof to support this theory. The Techichi is said to be a company breed favored by Toltec civilization in Mexico. Some historians believe that this small breed was from the island of Malta in Mediterranean. This assumption seems like to be more reliable because a somewhat resembling breed had appeared in European paintings, which was finished before Columbus reached South American. The first Chihuahua was recognized and registered by the American Kennel Club in 1905.

Generally speaking, from the appearance, Chihuahua is divided into two types: long-coat and the smooth-coat (also called short-haired). From the standpoint of biology, these two types are genetically the same breed. The long-coat Chihuahuas have soft double coats and nice guard hairs. Their long coat make they look fluffy. The other type of Chihuahua has soft glossy but short coat. Compared to the long-coat breed, short-haired Chihuahuas usually need trimming and minimal grooming.

It is complicate to classify Chihuahua colors because Chihuahuas come in a variety of colors and patterns. They can be Fawn, Red, Chocolate, Blue, Cream and Black. The Chihuahuas we usually see have mixed colors or have spotted coat such as Piebald spotting, extreme black spotting and Dalmatian spotting. Although blue Chihuahuas are considered as a rare breed, no color or pattern would be more valuable than the others.

The temperament of Chihuahua depends largely on their parents and grandparents’ genetic temperament. The socialization and training would also affect them temperament. In fact, before you choose a Chihuahua, you should firstly think about your temperament, which would make a difference in the temperament of Chihuahua puppies. Chihuahua would be fiercely loyal to its owner and can be over protective of the owner. This breed tends to be much friendly with other Chihuahuas rather than other breeds. Chihuahuas are unsuitable for families that with impatient children, because Chihuahuas would be defensive to this kind of kids.
